First phase of Yamal LNG project becomes operational

On December 8, Yamal LNG shipped the first cargo of LNG from Sabetta, marking the formal operation of the first phase of this super project. Yamal LNG, world’s largest and most complex LNG project in the Arctic region, is a significant example of energy cooperation between China and Russia.

Yamal LNG is an integrated project that covers an entire chain of natural gas production, processing, LNG manufacturing, and sales and shipping. The project has proved reserves of 1.3 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 60.18 million tons of gas condensate. It will be put into operation in three phases. At full capacity, the three-train facility will supply 16.5 million tons of LNG per year to Asian and European markets.

The project is jointly owned by Novatek (50.1%), Total (20%), CNPC (20%), and Silk Road Fund (9.9%). As one of the shareholders, CNPC has participated in the operation of the project throughout its industry chain.

The successful implementation of the Yamal project plays a positive and demonstration role in promoting the Belt and Road Initiative and in the building of the Eurasian Economic Union. CNPC, together with its partners, has established the Yamal Model in energy cooperation and promoted new practices in jointly building a “Silk Road on Ice” by China and Russia. In the future, LNG delivery from Yamal to China will be of great significance to China’s efforts in accelerating the restructuring of its energy mix and safeguarding energy security.
